Good morning. Here’s what you need to know today:
Summer heat: Highs temperatures in Sacramento will come close to triple digits today, according to the National Weather Service. The forecast calls for a high of 98 degrees. The heat is expected to intensify Monday, with a high of 102 degrees, according to the weather service.
Hot and dry: State, local and federal firefighters have seen blazes break out exceedingly early in the calendar year, when forests typically would be awash in moisture. Agencies are bracing for one of the longest and most difficult fire seasons in memory. Daniel Berlant, spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, and top fire officials have been warning for months that the state faces serious peril from wildland fires this year, as the drought – stretching into a third year – has sucked dry much of the state’s brush lands and forests more quickly than in years with more normal precipitation levels.
Arrest made: California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection officials arrested a Sacramento man for allegedly sparking a Shasta County wildfire that has burned 2,930 acres and destroyed six buildings.
Conflict?: Sacramento County Supervisor Susan Peters has voted for dozens of projects at Mather Field despite owning land and office space at the former air base– an arrangement that has raised questions by Mather-expansion critics about whether she has a conflict of interest.
