Adam Cox: Support for schools

July 14, 2014

As an elected member of a local school board, it pains me to see the Merced County Office of Education stray from its mission of supporting districts and thereby ensuring a high-quality education for Merced County’s students.

School districts in Merced County have been preparing for years for a massive shift in the way that we do things. Funding, technology, instructional methods and curriculum are just a few major areas that have experienced fundamental changes for the better in recent years. I don’t know of a single district that isn’t actively launching or ramping up a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematic) or STEAM (the A is for arts) program. This area is not lacking exceptional academic options. There is no scarcity of rigorous courses or challenging programs for local students.

I encourage MCOE and superintendent Steven Gomes to reassess the decision to divert precious county office time and resources from supporting local districts. This is not the time to drain resources from local schools, it’s the time to support them.
