Injured woman spends night in wrecked vehicle before rescue

MARIPOSA -- A 61-year-old woman whose vehicle ran off Highway 140 and couldn't be spotted from the road spent Sunday night pinned inside the wreckage with serious injuries before being able to call for help from her cell phone this morning, authorities say.

Emergency crews found the woman near Yosemite Oaks Road about five miles northeast of Mariposa.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the woman called emergency dispatchers at 9:21 a.m. and told them she could see traffic going by. But she did not remember where she was on Highway 140 or how far she was from Mariposa, where she had come from or driven through last night, said CHP officer Tom Killian.

About 20 minutes later, rescue crews pinpointed her location by reports from the woman detailing when she could hear their sirens, Killian said.

She was flown to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, Killian said.

The woman's name, hometown and further details were not available.
