A May Day Surprise

SUN-STAR PHOTO BY LISA JAMES With 102 flowers, Teresa Pimintel's Ephiphyllum or rare orchid cactus is in full bloom this May for the first time in 44 years. The last time the cactus bloomed, with only 36 flowers, seventy-year-old Teresa remembers acting as an interpreter for her Italian immigrant Mother Lia Bandoni when the Merced Sun-Star paid a visit in 1966. Competition continues tomorrow evening from 4-7:30 pm and Saturday morning starting at 8:30 am at the Merced College track. April 30th, 2009
