MERCED Merced's Head Start office is waiting for guidance from its Washington, D.C., headquarters on the extent of federal budget cuts and how they should be implemented locally, director Linda Kaercher said. Kaercher said she has been told to expect a 5 percent drop in funding from the federal sequestration cuts that went into effect this month. That could mean about $600,000 less in funding.
MERCED The Merced County Office of Education has some new quarters that will help it consolidate functions and ultimately save rent over the next few years. Administrators of the Head Start program run by MCOE settled into 8,000 square feet of office space on Cooper Avenue at the end of December. Their wing will house 21 administrators and includes a training room. Linda Kaercher, Head Start director, said moving from a rented office complex near G Street and Alpine Drive will save the program $35,000 to $40,000 in rent this year.

ATWATER School Superintendent Melinda Hennes is retiring at the end of June. Hennes, 59, announced her retirement Tuesday night to trustees at their monthly board meeting. She has spent 36 years in education, the last eight as superintendent of the Atwater Elementary School District. Last May, trustees voted 3-2 to fire Hennes but would not state a reason.
