Merced resident Aubrey Nelson was awarded the 2015 Woman of the Year by Assemblyman Adam Gray’s office. She is being recognized for being an organizer of “Love Merced,” a project that brings residents together to clean up the city.
The Religious Freedom Restoration Act will prevent state and local governments from imposing a “substantial burden” on a person’s free exercise of religion, unless the government can demonstrate a compelling reason. It mirrors a federal law enacted in 1993; similar statutes are on the books in 19 states. Gay rights groups call it a “license to discriminate.”
