The Merced Police Officers Association on Tuesday released a strongly worded open letter directed at city leaders, calling for better compensation for police and more officers to beef up the ranks of the understaffed department.
Though over the past several years the number of homeless people living in Merced County has continued to grow, advocates say efforts to house them are working. Last month, the coalition of advocates in the Merced County Continuum of Care reported that nearly 900 people are homeless in the county. Just this week, leaders from the Continuum said 232 people have been housed in the past six months.
Prosecutors on Wednesday filed felony charges against the two men accused of shooting a Merced police officer last weekend. Jaime M. Caudillo of Los Banos and Steven P. Rincon of Fresno face possible life sentences in prison if convicted.
A veteran Merced County correctional officer is accused of sexually touching three women – an inmate and two Sheriff’s Department employees, according to criminal charges filed by the District Attorney’s Office.
The Merced Irrigation District officials on Tuesday said no water will be available from Lake McClure this year and some Merced County farmers may not receive any water at all from the district this year.
Developer Greg Hostetler pledged $1 million this week to the Merced Police Department to go toward a foundation for officers. The announcement was made during the public comment section of the Merced City Council meeting Monday to the surprise of just about everyone in the room.
