Stanislaus County supervisors voted Tuesday to tighten the rules for well permits, requiring farmers outside irrigation districts to show that new wells won’t have a detrimental effect on groundwater. Also, pumping data will be collected from private well owners, but officials promised to keep the data confidential.

Tom Bates is looking forward to joining the Merced County Board of Education. Bates ran unopposed for the Westside seat on the five-member board in the Nov. 4 general election. He will be seated Dec. 16 and will replace David March on the board.
A Le Grand man with a lengthy criminal history remained behind bars Monday, five days after evading capture and leading deputies on a short manhunt, according to the Merced County Sheriff’s Department.
