Crop report for May 12, 2007


Small Grains & Rice: Winter forage cutting for silage and hay continues. Rice planting and flooding of fields continue.

Other Field Crops: The second cutting of alfalfa is complete. Spring sugarbeet harvest continues to wind down. Herbicide application to corn continue.

Fruits, Nuts, Grapes & Berries: Spring irrigating, fertilizing and weed spraying of orchards and vineyards along with other cultural practices continue. Walnut blight spraying is complete. Strawberry harvest for fresh market and freezer continues. Cherry harvest has begun.

Vegetables: Packing and shipping of radicchio continues. Preplant sweet potato field fumigations are winding down. Market tomato and processing tomato transplant, bell pepper, sweet potato and watermelon planting continues. Asparagus harvest is almost complete. Cantaloupe, honeydew and freezer been planting is under way.

Livestock & Poultry: The rangeland on the east side of the county has begun to dry up, and the westside rangeland is already dry. The amount of rangeland forage growth remains way below normal. Supplemental feeding of livestock along with nutrients continues. Out-of-county livestock continue being moved off rangeland early due to lack of forage.
