Driver course offered

Merced College Office of Continuing Education is offering Mature Driver Improvement classes. Many insurance companies offer discounts to drivers 50 and older who complete this course. The eight-hour course will include classroom instruction on driver safety, how the effects of aging can impair driving ability, how to prevent or offset hazardous conditions, and road courtesy. Discussions on how to improve driving performance and updates about rules, laws and equipment are also included. There is no registration fee. Classes are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan 24. and Feb. 8 at the Merced Tri-College Center, Building 5.

Symphony to perform

Winter Pops Concert will be presented by the Merced Symphony at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Merced Theatre, 310 W. Main St. Tickets are $39 for adults and $14 for full-time students. Tickets are available online at or at the box office. Highlights include music from “The Magnificent Seven,” “West Side Story,” classics such as Bolero and more. Local singer Cheryl Lockett and tango dancer Jennifer Lee will make their first appearances with the symphony. The 2013-14 Youth Audition winner Parker Van Ostrand will also perform. Learn to prune roses

The Atwater Garden Club is offering a free rose pruning workshop from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 25 at the Bloss Memorial Rose Garden gazebo at Cedar Avenue and First Street in Atwater. The demonstration will be by master gardener Georgeanne Adamny. Refreshments are at 9:30 a.m. Bring pruning shears and gloves, and dress warm. For more information, call Sherry at (209) 777-8480.

Volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed to staff a warming tent for the community’s most needy and at risk through March. Many people have nowhere else to spend cold nights and do not have access to official shelters. The tent is located on B Street near 13th Street. Volunteers work from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. For more information, call Bruce Metcalf at (209) 480-3899 or Phil Schmauss at (209) 658-9558.

Advisory council to meet

Franklin-Beachwood Municipal Advisory Council meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Franklin Elementary School, 2936 Franklin Road, Room 21.
