A 39-year-old man was found shot to death in his Santa Rita Park home near Dos Palos -- and Merced County sheriff's investigators have launched a homicide investigation.

The victim, Albert Rodriguez Macias, was found on the floor of his home around 1:30 p.m. Sunday by family members. Deputies received a 911 call and responded to the residence in the 7900 block of Azusa Road, according to Deputy Tom MacKenzie.

An ambulance arrived, but Macias was declared dead at the scene.

At first, detectives weren't sure how Macias died and wondered whether he committed suicide. The death was labeled "suspicious," MacKenzie said.

After an autopsy conducted Monday by the coroner's office determined Macias was shot numerous times, however, investigators concluded Macias was a victim of homicide.

MacKenzie said nobody has been arrested. Detectives are releasing few details about the case, to protect the integrity of the investigation.

There were no signs of robbery at the scene, MacKenzie said, and the victim has no known gang ties.

Before recently moving to the Dos Palos area, the victim lived in Merced.

Macias' death is the fourth homicide reported in Merced County this year.
