For Roxanna Barragan it was a dream come true.

The Livingston High senior made her college choice official during a signing ceremony on Thursday. The Wolves defender will be playing soccer at UC Merced.

“I’m ecstatic,” Barragan said. “This is what I wanted. This was the plan since I started playing competitive soccer. I get to stay close to home and I’m going to a good soccer program.”

Barragan felt the possibility of playing soccer started looking like a realistic goal when she was 14 years old and playing club ball. She was going to bigger tournaments and she was able to hold her own against talented players.

UC Merced coach Megan Atoigue and assistant coach Hannah Brown were both on hand for the signing and excited to add Barragan to a team that went 6-8-1 last season.

“She is physical, strong and has good size,” Atoigue said. “Technically she’s strong, she has good foot skills, she has good vision, she knows where to place the ball. She does well academically, too. Most importantly, she’ll do well at school and get her degree.”

Barragan plans to major in biology and hopes to become a pharmacist.

“It’s kind of sunk in that this is happening, but it probably won’t sink in all the way until I get there and I’m able to be there with my team,” Barragan said.
