The Merced Symphony is scheduled to perform its Second Annual Winter Pops Concert 7:30 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Merced Theatre.

Themed “Villains and Heroes,” the concert will honor everyday heroes people respect for their daily work in the military, police and fire departments, education, medical and dental fields, churches and community service agencies, among other professions, according to a symphony press release.

Of course, there will always be some villains to try and mess things up – and they are also represented in the musical program, the release said.

The program will feature several beloved movie and Broadway themes, such as “The Magnificent Seven,” “North by Northwest,” “Westside Story,” and “Il Postino: The Postman.” Local singer Cheryl Lockett will sing Latin hits “Perfidia” and “Frenesi” with percussion similar to the style of Tito Puente. Music will also include swing time music, like “In the Mood” and “Don’t Be that Way” by Benny Goodman. Dancers from the Merced Ballet Company will perform to “Killer Tango” and “Bolero.”

Also featured during the show will be the October 2013 Youth Audition winner, pianist Parker Van Ostrand, 10. Ostrand has already displayed great talent, having performed statewide, as well as in Arizona, Japan and Singapore. Van Ostrand played at Carnegie Hall from ages 5 through 7 after winning the AAGDT and Protégé Competitions, according to the release.

Parker will perform Kabalevsky’s Piano Concerto in D on the piano donated by Dr. Art Kamangar to the Merced Theatre.

The orchestra will be led by music director Henrik Jul Hansen, who has conducted the Merced Symphony the past 14 seasons.

The Merced Theatre is at 301 W. Main St. in downtown Merced. Tickets are $35 for adults and $10 for students, with an additional ticketing fee at time of purchase at the Merced Theatre box office. Tickets can be purchased online at mercedtheatre.org or at the door the evening of the performance. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for concession sales.
