A Merced teenager died Monday afternoon when the sports utility vehicle he was driving left the road and overturned, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The accident occurred at 4 p.m. on River Road east of Sexton Road, the CHP said. The location is in San Joaquin County, east of Ripon.
The 19-year-old, whose name has not been released, was driving a 1998 Ford Expedition west on River when the car veered abruptly to the right and drove off the northern edge of the road.
The Expedition became airborne, flipping and rolling several times times across a vacant dirt field, the CHP said. The crash was so violent that the driver was ejected despite wearing his seat belt. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident, the CHP said. The toxicology report is pending.
