One of five people hurt in an early Saturday morning head-on crash on Highway 99 near Merced has died, another is critical and one driver is facing a felony vehicular manslaughter charge.
Armando Lule, 19, of San Diego, died Sunday morning at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. Another passenger in the car driven by Daniel Wells, 20, of San Diego, Thomas Reynolds, 23, of San Diego, was listed in critical condition Tuesday at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.
Aubree Hogue, 20, of Dos Palos remains in Merced County Jail in lieu of $400,000 bail. She is charged with felony drunken driving, drunken driving causing bodily injury and vehicular manslaughter, according to a correctional official.
Debbie Collier of Central Point, Ore., Wells' mother, said her son and Roger Trueblood III, 19, of San Diego, were less seriously injured in the 2 a.m. crash and have returned to Miramar Naval Air Station where they are on medical leave and will receive counseling today.
California Highway Patrol officers said Hogue's 1997 Chevrolet Silverado pickup was southbound in the northbound lanes of Highway 99 north of Franklin Road and struck the right front of Wells' 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer. Reynolds was sitting in the right front seat and Lule was in the right rear seat.
Both Lule and Reynolds were in the U.S. Navy. Wells and Trueblood are lance corporals in the Marines, Collier said. Soldiers and sailors at Miramar are on standby with fires in the San Diego area
