Some good news for Merced's retail front.
Anna's Linens, a discount home decorations retailer, said Friday it will open a Merced location Aug. 12.
The store will open in the Merced Marketplace shopping center on Olive Avenue, in the building that until 2008 housed Linens and Things, an industry competitor.
Merced city development manager Frank Quintero said the announcement, and others like it are helping city staff regain a "cautious confidence" for the local economy.
"It's a reinforcement that Merced is a valuable retail market," he said. "Not every retailer issues a press release, but many of the small shopping centers are getting filled up."
Anna's Linens has hired 15 employees for the Merced store.
At 15,000-square-foot, the store will be one of the largest locations operated by the 260-branch retailer, said spokeswoman Danielle Patla.
Quintero didn't have tax revenue projections available for the new store. He said the city's building staff focused on quickly turning around permits and inspections to streamline the store's opening.
The store will hold a grand opening next Thursday, offering the first 100 customers in line a $10 savings certificate, and a number of one-day specials. The store has also partnered with the nearby Sizzler restaurant to offer free lunch samples to the first 300 guests between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. who show a receipt from Anna's Linens.
Anna's Linens is headquartered in Costa Mesa.
