Ryan Martinez can add another postseason honor to his list.
The Le Grand senior was named to Cal-Hi Sports’ Small School All-State First Team as a multipurpose player on Monday.
Martinez was also selected as the Sun-Star Player of the Year and the Southern League co-MVP.
“It feels like all the hard work pays off,” Martinez said. “If you have trust in God, you can accomplish anything.”
Martinez led the Bulldogs to a fourth consecutive Sac-Joaquin Section championship with 2,138 rushing yards and 33 touchdowns.
Le Grand finished the year ranked No. 1 in Division 5 by Cal-Hi Sports.
“It’s tougher to get noticed out here in little Le Grand,” Martinez said. “But we’ve put ourselves on the map with our four section titles. People are starting to hear about us.”
Hilmar’s Devon Medeiros and Mariposa’s Phillip Rausch were both named to the all-state small schools second team.
Medeiros set a school record with 13 field goals this season and also broke the Yellowjackets record for longest field goal with a 56-yard kick against Center in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.
Rausch averaged 42.2 yards per punt and pinned eight kicks inside the 20-yard line for the Grizzlies.
Scheidt will coach the South for the Lions game, which will be played June 14 at Tracy High. He’ll then coach the North team in the Rotary game at Veterans Stadium on June 27 in Merced.
“I played in the Lions game and we had opportunities to coach in the game in the past, but it always fell at the same time we were at the Cal team camp,” he said. “I didn’t think it was fair to the next season to forgo the camp. I’ve had a couple opportunities to coach the Rotary game and it’s been great.”
Golden Valley is coming off two big wins last week over Merced and Turlock to take sole possession of first place in the Central California Conference. The Cougars (18-5 overall, 5-1 CCC) bring a six-game winning streak this season into the Nest.
Atwater (14-8, 2-3) needs to end its losing streak against Golden Valley if it’s going to have any shot at making the playoffs after losing to Merced on Friday.
