Area athletes were well represented when the Sac-Joaquin Section handed out its A. Dale Lackey/CSEA scholarships at a breakfast ceremony last week in Lodi.
The scholarships are awarded for outstanding athletic performance, community service and academic success during their four years of high school.
Winning $1,000 scholarships were Golden Valley’s Audrey DeBard, Livingston’s Gurleen Chahal and Atwater’s Hans van Warmerdam.
DeBard participated in water polo, swimming, basketball and band. Her 4.3 GPA ranks 10th in her class.
Chahal competed in wrestling, track, volleyball and cross country. He was a two-time section champion in wrestling and has a 4.09 GPA.
Van Warmerdam played water polo, basketball and swam at Atwater. He has traveled to Africa on a medical mission and has a 4.25 GPA.
Receiving $600 scholarships were Mariposa’s Shea Williams and Le Grand’s Ryan Martinez.
Williams played volleyball, basketball and softball for Mariposa all four years, earning 11 varsity letters. Her 4.33 GPA ranks fifth in her class and she will attend Baylor University.
Martinez was the Sun-Star Football Player of the Year this past fall after leading the Bulldogs to their fourth consecutive section title. His 4.11 GPA ranks No. 1 in his class.
The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
The game always draws a big crowd and serves as a fundraiser for the the Brian and Kevin Nannini Scholarship Foundation. Last year the foundation handed out 20 scholarships of $300 to every senior on the Merced and Golden Valley baseball teams.
The foundation has now handed out more than 100 scholarships and $40,000.
It’s an event that Merced High boys have dominated, winning four straight.
The Bears are again out in front in the Central California Conference. The Merced boys have not lost a conference dual meet since 2008. They will try to make it 33 wins in a row on Friday at Golden Valley as they try to win their sixth straight CCC championship.
The Merced girls have an impressive streak of their own at 21 straight wins as they attempt to win their fifth straight title. The Bears last dual loss game to Pitman in 2010.
