Saddle up: Some of the area's most talented musicians bring sounds of the West to Merced stage

The Wild West takes center stage next weekend as the Merced Music Guild presents "Westward Ho!" -- its 48th Pops Concert.

"(It) is a celebration in music and song, of the adventure and development of America's West," Anita Chisholm said. "The Merced Music Guild is proud to present its 48th annual Pops Concert which musically depicts the spirit and enthusiasm of earlier settlers."

  • Thrill of the hunt: True bargain hunters test their mettle at the flea market

    Exiting the gate to the flea market was a young couple carrying just one purchase: a large pack of paper towels. An older couple pulled a small cart behind them, filled with produce. And a little girl in a stroller played with a brightly colored plastic whirligig. Hmm... Not exactly what some would call "treasures." But still, the idea of hunting for bargains in booths and tents or the back of a truck has quite an appeal for many shoppers today.

    Big Valley Arts and Culture Festival will have everything from pottery to paintings

    “Suddenly, it seemed like the whole city came to life,” Staci Santa, executive director of the Merced County Arts Council said, recollecting her first Big Valley Arts and Culture Festival. “It was amazing to be out on Main Street and see so much talent.”
