Gay charity pageant
The 3M Quad-County Pageant, a show featuring men, women and drag queens from Merced, Stanislaus, Tuolumne and Calaveras counties, begins with a dinner at 5:30 p.m. June 6 at Merced Women’s Club House, 707 W. 22nd St. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Young writers academy
The Bobcat Young Writers Academy runs 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays, June 15-25, at UC Merced. The program offers students entering grades 1 through 8 in the fall the opportunity to develop their talents as writers. Students will write, share, discuss, revise and edit their writing with other young writers under the guidance of UC Merced Writing Project teacher consultants. The Merced County Republican Women will host a survivor from the Saddam Hussein regime as speaker at 11:30 a.m. June 15 at the Branding Iron. The meeting begins at 11:30 a.m. with lunch served at noon. Lydia Kano, born in Baghdad, says she is one of four children who survived Saddam’s regime. With the help of her parents, she came to America in 1979 and is now an American citizen with a college degree.
