Jazztoons
Program
No musical genre shares animation's sense of freedom, imagination, and humor more than jazz, so it's not surprising that the two art forms have enjoyed a long and happy relationship. Here's a clutch of rarely seen shorts that combine jazz with incomparable visuals. Highlights include Minnie the Moocher, a 1932 Betty Boop cartoon with unforgettable arrangements by the great Cab Calloway; Norman McClaren's extraordinary 1949 Begone Dull Care, whose animation was drawn, etched, and painted directly onto celluloid, with rollicking accompaniment by pianist Oscar Peterson; and 1957s The Adventures of an *, a typically offbeat animated journey by the great John Hubley.
