Madera County Sheriff’s investigators recovered a firearm and live rounds of ammunition Monday from the area where a California Highway Patrol officer shot and killed a man the day before following the search for a carjacker.
The Sunday shooting took place near Avenue 12 and Highway 41, behind the Branch and Vine event venue, while a party was going on nearby. Sheriff Jay Varney said it followed the carjacking at 41 and Avenue 15, where three men took a car by force. Only one man left in the car and the other two fled on foot. A deputy spotted the stolen car about 2:30 p.m. at 41 and Avenue 12, and also saw a suspect running away. During the search for the suspect, the CHP officer fired his weapon at the man, fatally wounding him. Varney said the officer feared for his own life.
Two men who were initially detained by detectives in the incident were later released. The identity of the man who died was withheld pending notification of family, and the CHP officer’s name was not released.
