Los Banos Mayor Tommy Jones is expected to testify today before the House Committee on Financial Services on the problems the Central Valley faces.
Rep. Dennis Cardoza, D-Merced, invited Jones to testify because his city has been chronicled as a foreclosure capital by The Wall Street Journal.
The committee has asked the mayor to suggest ways to determine what communities are most severely impacted by the economic crisis and options for structuring targeted assistance.
Cardoza is working to pass legislation that would get the Valley labeled as an economic disaster area. His effort received a boost when the hearing was scheduled.
Never miss a local story.
If his bill becomes law it will direct more federal funds to areas hardest hit by the recession to aid their recovery.
The money, which could come as Community Development Block Grant funding, would be used for job training, economic development and housing.
Cardoza has declined to say how much money could be funneled to the Valley if the legislation were to pass because he doesn't want to raise expectations.
The hearing is at 10 a.m. Pacific time and will be broadcast online. A link will be posted on the Sun-Star's Web site.
