A 34-year-old Winton man faces felony driving-under-the-influence and vehicular manslaughter charges after a crash late Sunday on westbound Walnut Avenue and Cypress Avenue, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Officers said suspect Jose Luis Dominguez, 34, was driving a 2000 Ford Taurus on Walnut Avenue around 9:30 p.m. at an unknown speed, approaching a slowing car ahead of him. Dominguez, who also goes by the last name "Gaytan," tried to pass the car by driving westbound in the eastbound lane, just as 62-year-old Donna Randall of Winton was turning left onto southbound Cypress Avenue in a 1999 Ford Taurus.
The front of Dominguez's car crashed into the driver's side of Randall's car. Randall, a grandmother, suffered major injuries and was pronounced dead at Mercy Medical Center Merced. Her passenger, 59-year-old Allen Randall, suffered major injuries and was taken to Mercy Medical Center Merced, according to the CHP.
Dominguez was taken to a Modesto hospital with injuries, and later booked on suspicion of felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter, according to the CHP. Dominguez was also booked on suspicion of driving without a license.
