A 69-year-old Merced woman was killed Monday in a two-car collision at the intersection of Atwater Jordan and Bert Crane roads, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The victim has been identified as Liane Gertrud Hocking, according to the Merced County Coroner's Office.
The crash was reported around 5:10 p.m. after the victim was driving a 2000 Mitsubishi Galant northbound on Bert Crane Road, and had stopped at the intersection of Atwater Jordan Road, according to John Patterson, CHP spokesman.
Meanwhile, Carlos Eduardo Vieira was driving a 2006 Ford F-150 pickup eastbound on Atwater Jordan Road, approaching Bert Crane Road at about 50 mph.
While there are stop signs at the intersection for northbound and southbound traffic on Bert Crane Road, there are none on Atwater Jordan Road.
The victim drove the Mitsubishi into the intersection, directly in the Ford's path. Vieira tried to avoid the Mitsubishi by turning left, but was unable to prevent the crash. The front of the F-150 crashed into the driver's side door of the Mitsubishi.
Hocking was wearing a seat belt, but suffered major injuries. She was taken to Mercy Medical Center Merced, where she died. Vieira wasn't hurt in the crash.
Patterson said the crash remains under investigation.
