"Radio hams" from around the Central Valley will participate in a public demonstration of emergency communications on June 26-27 at Lake McSwain.
The annual event, called "Field Day," is the climax of the week-long Amateur Radio Week. The Turlock Amateur Radio Club will offer demonstrations and teach how people can obtain their own radio licenses. Field Day events will be held at the overflow camping area of McSwain Lake Recreational facility. Ham radio operators provide communications during disasters such as wildfires and winter storms. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Ham radio was the only way people could communicate in some areas.
More than 35,000 amateur radio operators participated last year at events across the country.
