Merced police are asking for the public's help in solving the July 12 stabbing death of Mario Alberto Zavala, 24.
Detectives believe that residents of the neighborhood of West 23rd and K streets have information about Zavala's murder. Det. John Fister said in a press release that people in the community have already provided some information that has helped forward the investigation.
Fister said the crime occurred on July 12, around 7:30 p.m. A man found Zavala leaning against a poll in the 2300 block of the K Street alleyway. Although the man wasn't aware the victim had been stabbed, he knew something was wrong and called law enforcement. The victim was able to speak with officers when they arrived. He was taken to a Modesto hospital, where he later died.
