HILMAR -- No one was hurt in a small fire reported Monday evening at the Hilmar Cheese Co. Visitor Center.
Denise Skidmore, the company's director of public relations and education, said the center was closed Tuesday but is expected to reopen today.
The center was closed at the time of the fire, and the cause is undetermined. Merced County Fire Department/CalFire firefighters responded to the building at Lander and August avenues at 8:57 p.m. The fire was discovered in an unoccupied kitchen in the second story of the building.
Skidmore said the building's sprinkler system worked properly and suppressed the fire until it could be fully extinguished by firefighters.
Never miss a local story.
Plant operations continued as usual on Tuesday, Skidmore said. A dollar amount for the damage done has yet to be determined.
A total of 28 firefighters, five fire engines, one water tender, two chief officers and one safety officer responded to the call. A Riggs Ambulance was requested to stand by in case of any injuries.
