The Department of Fish and Game is offering free mourning dove hunting for wing-shooters at 12 state-owned locations in Merced, Fresno and Stanislaus counties. Dove season runs Sept. 1-15.
While reservations are required for opening morning in the state areas, walk-on hunters may self-register starting at noon for the afternoon shoot and all other days for the rest of the 15-day season. The limit is 10 mourning doves per day, 20 in possession after opening day. The taking of exotic Eurasian-collared doves is allowed and don’t count against the mourning dove limit.
To hunt doves, hunters must possess a 2010-2011 hunting license and an Upland Gamebird Stamp. For more information, call the Los Banos Wildlife Area at (209) 826-0463; the Mendota Wildlife Area at (559) 655-4645; and The Outdoor Sportsman at (209) 957-4867.
