Baseball great Jackie Robinson’s daughter Sharon Robinson will visit Dairyland Elementary School in Chowchilla Tuesday morning to speak about her father.
Robinson will be at Dairyland because Morgan Dill, a fifth grader at Dairyland, won the 2011 essay contest “Breaking Barriers: In Sports, In Life.” Students will have the opportunity to meet Robinson and hear her speak about her father, the late Hall of Famer.
The essay contest recognizes students for their efforts to overcome personal barriers using values exemplified by Jackie Robinson. The contest is a major component of a multi-curricular character education program developed by Major League Baseball and Scholastic, Inc.
Later that day, the Oakland Athletics will host a pre-game ceremony at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum with Robinson and members of the Athletics to honor Dill, whose liver transplant was the topic of her winning essay. The on-field recognition will begin at approximately 6:52 p.m.
For more information, call the school at (559) 665-2394.
