The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Atwater surpassed its $80,000 goal by raising $97,014.37 on Sept. 17.
The relay began with more than 100 survivors walking the Survivors Lap, with team members from each team walking or running each hour during the 24-hour event. Music and fun was provided by DJs Ginny and Mark Carpenter, who entertained 392 participants. At dusk, 800 luminaria bags surrounded the track at Shaffer School in honor of those living with cancer or in memory of those who have died from the disease.
Sunday morning, campers woke to the sounds of music that kept those on the track energetic and motivated. Our activities concluded at 9 a.m. when special awards were presented at the closing ceremony.
Money raised from the 24-hour event will go toward the American Cancer Society's research, education, advocacy and services for cancer patients and their families. For information on Relay For Life or about cancer call 1-800-227-2345 or visit www.cancer.org
