The Merced County Coroner's Office identified the victim of Thursday's fatal car crash as Carnell Brinson, 38, of Merced.
The California Highway Patrol said Brinson was driving a blue Acura Legend east on East South Bear Creek Drive, approaching McKee Road at high speed just before 11 a.m. Thursday.
The road was wet and it was raining lightly in the area when Brinson attempted to negotiate a left turn and lost control of his car. The passenger side of the car collided with a tree, shearing the rear end off. The other half of the car landed in Bear Creek.
Brinson was pronounced dead at the scene.
