The Merced County sheriff's deputy who was injured in an accident Thursday was identified by the California Highway Patrol on Friday as 28-year-old Giovgiz Ysael.
Ysael suffered minor injuries and was taken to Los Banos Memorial Hospital after he swerved off the roadway to avoid a collision and ended up in a canal with about four feet of water, according to the CHP.
While driving his patrol car northbound on Turner Island Road near Los Banos at about 55 mph, Ysael swerved to avoid a head-on crash with a 1990 Acura, driven by 19-year-old Oscar Berumen of Los Banos.
Berumen lost control of his vehicle and entered the opposite lane at about 60 mph after he saw the patrol car and tried to slow down, according to the CHP.

While trying to avoid a collision, Ysael's cruiser went through some mud on the east side of the road, which caused it to re-enter the roadway and travel across both lanes before hitting a power pole and coming to rest in the canal, according to the CHP.
