There will be a reception for Dr. Carlos Cabrera at 6 p.m. Friday at Fernando's Bistro, 510 W. Main St. in downtown Merced.
Cabrera will be a guest speaker at UC Merced and will make a special presentation to doctors at Mercy Medical Center.
He's a native of Mérida, the capital of the state of Yucatán, Mexico. In medical school, he concentrated his research in areas such as fetal and infant mortality, treatments for hyperglycemia and pancreatic damage, and community-acquired pneumonia.
He was awarded the Doctor of the Year award for his jurisdictional health area in 2008. He's the Mexican adviser for Brazos Abiertos Inc. and the director general for Fundacion BAI A.C., the Mexican nonprofit that partners with Brazos Abiertos in the U.S.
