Two teenage boys are expected to survive after being shot Thursday night behind a market in the South Dos Palos area, the Merced County Sheriff's Department reported.
The shooting, which is believed to be gang-related, was reported about 9 p.m. near Sixth and M streets, according to Deputy Tom MacKenzie.
Few details are known about the shooting. Mac-Kenzie said one of the victims, a 14-year-old, wouldn't cooperate with deputies. The other victim, a 15-year-old, is still recovering from surgery.
The 15-year-old was shot in the back, the 14-year-old in the lower abdomen. After the shooting, the younger teen was able to run home. He was taken by family members to Memorial Hospital Los Banos.
Deputies found the 15-year-old a few miles away from the market, near Eucalyptus Road and Lexington Avenue. He was flown to a Modesto hospital for treatment.
Deputies have said only that the shooters are two Latino males.
Deputies are asking anyone with information about the shooting or the whereabouts of the culprits to call (209) 385-7472. Tips are kept confidential and callers can remain anonymous.
