ATWATER -- Interim Chief Frank Pietro of the Atwater Police Department got the green-light recently to take the reins as the city's permanent police chief.
The appointment will be effective April 20, according to an email from Atwater City Manager Kathy Kivley.
Pietro took leadership of the department after former police Chief Richard Hawthorne retired from the post late last year.
Over the past several months, Pietro has been praised by City Council members and other city leaders for the work he's done in his interim role.
Now that the position is permanent, Pietro said he can start moving forward with his plans for the department.
"Now, things will settle down a little bit," he said, adding that he has a new mission and vision statement for the department as well as an updated motto.
