A 44-year-old man is dead after being stabbed late Thursday night in the 9500 block of Broadway in Planada, Merced County sheriff's deputies reported.
Juan Albarran, 61, of Planada, was taken into custody as a suspect in the case. The Merced County Coroner's Office identified the victim as Jose Vera.
Sheriff Mark Pazin said detectives believe the stabbing happened after an argument between Albarran and Vera became physical. Pazin said alcohol was involved, and the suspect also struck the victim with a wooden object.
Pazin didn't say what the argument was about.
The incident was reported at 10:15 p.m. near Planada Elementary School. Deputies were dispatched to the scene and found Vera in front of the school with multiple stab wounds, according to deputy Tom MacKenzie, sheriff's spokesman.
Vera was unconscious when deputies arrived. Deputies performed CPR and the victim was taken by paramedics to Mercy Medical Center in Merced, where he was pronounced dead.
After the stabbing, deputies found Albarran at a residence on Krafft Road in Planada.
The death is the eighth homicide reported in Merced County this year.
