A 17-year-old male is lucky to be alive after a gunman at his doorstep nearly shot him Thursday night, Atwater police reported.
Police responded to the scene at 7:48 p.m. in the 2900 block of Secretariat Drive, according to Lt. Sam Joseph.
The victim heard a knock at the door, answered it, and saw a Latino man wearing a black hooded sweatshirt standing outside.
The man said he was looking for a person with a certain nickname -- and the victim replied he was that person.
The man then pulled a gun and fired several shots at the victim, who tried to close the door and run.
The gunman then fled on foot in an unknown direction. He remains at large, Joseph said.
Police arrived and found three bullet holes in the wall, and three spent shells inside the home. The victim wasn't hit by any of the shots -- although he did have a hole in his shirt, from where one of the bullets had passed through, without striking his skin.
Atwater police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call Detective Bill Richards at (209) 357-6396. Tips are kept confidential and you can remain anonymous.
