A 35-year-old Delhi man arrested on suspicion of killing his father appeared for the first time in Merced County Superior Court on Tuesday for a brief video conference hearing with judges and attorneys.
Jason Curtis Reed was arrested at a truck stop near Lodi last week on suspicion of shooting his father, 67-year-old J.D. Reed, to death.
Reed will be represented by Chief Deputy Public Defender Vincent Andrade. During Tuesday's hearing, Commissioner Jeanne Schechter postponed the defendant's arraignment on homicide charges until 8:30 a.m. Friday in Courtroom 1.
Although Reed appeared Tuesday on a television monitor, on a live video feed from the jail, his next court appearance will likely be in person.
He's being held at the Merced County Jail in lieu of $1.3 million bail.
Authorities haven't elaborated on a possible motive, or specified how many times the victim was shot, but Merced County Sheriff Mark Pazin did say the defendant's father appeared to have been shot in the upper body.
Reed lived with the victim, who was found dead Jan. 1 in his bed at his home in the 9000 block of Sycamore Street in Delhi.
The death was labeled as Merced County's first homicide of 2013.
