The Merced County Library was the site of the Saturday of Service for Soroptimists event.

Soroptimists International of Merced, a professional women’s service organization, got down to business last weekend, spending the day cleaning the library as part of its annual Saturday of Service. Soroptimists around the world designate the first Saturday in March for performing such tasks.

For the past 10 years, the Merced organization has focused its efforts on sprucing up the library.

As cyclists participating in the downtown Merced portion of the Merco Cycling Classic flew around the course outside, Soroptimists went about their business in the library — cleaning shelves, books, tables, toys in the Little Theater, furniture, even computer keyboards.

Participants cut out items for use in arts and crafts programs at the library this summer. Sixteen members of the organization participated in the Saturday of Service.
