A 20-year-old man was arrested Monday on suspicion of causing a hit-and-run crash in the city. He is accused of crashing into a tree and fleeing the scene, police reported Tuesday.
Seth Shelton was taken into custody not long after police responded to the 800 block of Olive Avenue near Winton Way at 6:30 p.m., according to Lt. Sam Joseph.
Witnesses said the suspect crashed into the tree, causing front-end damage to his vehicle, and fled on foot. Witnesses pointed out to officers where the suspect went, and he was arrested in the 1700 block of Olive Avenue.
Joseph said the suspect later admitted to police he was involved in the accident. No one was hurt in the crash.
Officers reported finding a small hatchet concealed on Shelton, in addition to a gram of hashish, a gram of methamphetamine and a gram of marijuana.
Shelton was booked at the Merced County Jail.
