A 36-year-old man was arrested earlier this week after a pursuit with Atwater police, authorities reported Wednesday.

According to Lt. Sam Joseph, officer David Walker observed a white 1994 Honda Civic traveling eastbound on Mitchell Avenue and Winton Way about 11 p.m. Tuesday. The officer recognized the driver as Gary Wayne Akers.

The officer knew Akers had a suspended driver's license and was on parole, Joseph said. At Maple Street and Olive Avenue, the officer turned on his emergency lights and tried to pull over the vehicle.

Akers failed to stop, according to police, instead increasing his speed to about 50 mph.

The Civic continued westbound on Olive Avenue until Akers lost control, police said.

The vehicle came to a stop near the intersection of Olive and Vine Street.

The officer then took Akers into custody at gunpoint, police said. He was later booked into the Merced County Jail.
