Digging causes gas leak near Merced home

A man digging a post hole to repair a fence hit an underground natural gas line near a Merced home, causing a leak that took about an hour to handle Wednesday night, Fire Department officials reported.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

The leak occurred about 6 p.m. in the 3100 block of Sacramento Drive, near the Loughborough area.

Battalion Chief Tom McCall said firefighters were dispatched to the area as a precaution and remained on standby while PG&E worked to shut off the gas.

McCall said the residents of one home near the leak left the area after the fence repairman ruptured the gas line. He said that other nearby residents were told to stay inside until the situation was contained.

It took about an hour to shut off gas to the damaged line, McCall said. He added that people should always check before they start digging, to avoid hitting underground utility lines.
