A 16-year-old suspected gang member faces burglary charges after Atwater police said they caught him climbing out an Atwater High School classroom window.

The teenager was captured about 1 a.m. Sunday in the 2200 block of Winton Way after a brief foot chase that ended when he fell, Sgt. Dick Wisdom said.

“Numerous items have been recovered,” Wisdom said.

A complete list of property was not available Tuesday.

Police believe the teen broke into at least seven classrooms, four in the 600 wing and three in the 500 area, investigators said.

The teenager was arrested on suspicion of burglary, possession of stolen property, attempted burglary, resisting arrest and criminal street gang participation, police said.

“They’re still looking into whether anyone else may have been involved in the burglaries with him,” Wisdom said.

He confirmed the teenager may be a suspect in a weekend shooting at an Atwater home.

Wisdom confirmed the teenager was also arrested on suspicion of shooting at an inhabited dwelling but declined to say when and where the shooting occurred, saying that doing so would hamper the investigation.
