A suspected Atwater gang member wanted for robbery and attempted kidnapping was jailed late Thursday after a brief foot chase with authorities, Merced County Sheriff’s Department reported.

Rudy Amezcua, 22, was arrested around 11 p.m. along Highway 140 near Planada after he tried to run from Detective Erick Macias, the Sheriff’s Department said.

“Detective Macias recognized him (Amezcua) as an active Sureno gang member and tried to make contact with him,” Deputy Delray Shelton said. “He (Amezcua) began acting suspicious and started walking away.”

Shelton said Amezcua ran from the detective, but was quickly apprehended and detained.

Deputies said Amezcua was in possession of a razor blade and eight counterfeit $100 bills.

Amezcua was arrested on a robbery and attempted kidnapping warrant, as well as fresh allegations of possession of counterfeit bills and resisting arrest. Bail was set at $122,000.

Details of the warrant were not available Friday.
