A 25-year-old Los Banos man was killed early Saturday in a head-on collision on state Highway 59, south of Canton Road, just south of Merced, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The victim’s name was withheld pending notification of his family.
Two Dos Palos residents suffered minor injuries in the crash, the CHP said in a news release. Julia Garnica, 22, and a 16-year-old boy were taken to Mercy Medical Center in Merced for treatment, the CHP said.
Investigators said the Los Banos man was driving a 2006 Nissan north on Highway 59 at an unknown speed about 12:20 a.m. and collided head-on with a 2003 Mazda, driven by the teenager in the opposite direction, the CHP said.
It was still unclear on Saturday which vehicle crossed over the center line, the CHP said.
The Los Banos man was not wearing a seat belt, Officer Jason Schoonhoven said.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation, and the CHP is asking anyone with information to contact investigators at (209) 356-2900.
