Two Yosemite area art galleries have recently announced their “Call to Artists” for upcoming exhibits. Local artists still have time to prepare and submit their entries, and to compete for ribbons, certificates and cash awards:• In Mariposa, the Sierra Artists Gallery is accepting submissions for its annual Elizabeth Specht Memorial Miniature Show. This gallery is the home of the only miniature society within Northern California. And this particular juried show draws artwork from around the world.
Miniature art has been with us for centuries:
Ancient Greeks adorned coins and rings with engraved portraits.
Religious scribes and monks of the Middle Ages embellished manuscript pages with tiny detailed illustrations.
In England’s Elizabethan period, miniature portraits were painted on vellum (smooth animal skin) and ivory.
The exhibit will be held from March 4-23. Awards will be presented on March 23.
To qualify as a “miniature,” artwork may not exceed 25 square inches, and sculptures may be no larger than 6 cubic inches, including the base. A variety of media may be incorporated.
Entries are due at the gallery by Feb. 28. Sierra Artists Gallery is in downtown Mariposa on the southwest corner of Highway 140 and Sixth Street. Winter hours are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursdays through Mondays.
Visit the gallery or go to www.sierraartistsgallery.com for details and applications, or call (209) 966-2284.• “Valley View – Yosemite Trails, Currents and Visions” is the title of an upcoming juried show at Oakhurst’s Stellar Gallery. This Sierra Art Trails Special Exhibit will commemorate the 150-year anniversary of the Yosemite Grant.
Of course, the Yosemite region has inspired poets, artists, writers, conservationists and others since long before the land became federally protected.
All artwork will feature some aspect of Yosemite, including its past history and present status as one of the world’s most awe-inspiring destinations. Works may also encompass the land’s Native American heritage and folklore.
Artwork should arrive at Stellar Gallery no later than March 10.
This exhibit will be on display April 5 to May 4. A gala reception is scheduled for Saturday, April 12 at 4 p.m.
The gallery is at 40982 Highway 41, Suite 1, in Oakhurst. Call (559) 658-8844 or go to www.sierraarttrails.org/exhibits for more information.
