Merced Kiwanis celebrates 85th birthday

Members of the Kiwanis Club of Merced observed a milestone Wednesday, its 85th anniversary.

The club was chartered Feb. 5, 1929, 14 years after the national organization was founded in Detroit. Originally Kiwanis clubs focused on business networking but soon changed their focus to service.

Merced Kiwanians participate in Junior Olympics, Special Olympics, high school scholarships, a monthly dinner at the D Street homeless shelter, the Merced Rescue Mission’s annual Thanksgiving dinner, Playhouse Merced Youth Conservatory and the Kiwanis International Eliminate Project.

The local club meets Wednesdays at noon at the Merced Elks Lodge except for the last Wednesday of the month, which is an evening meeting. The group is seeking new members. More information about the club is available by contacting President John Carlos at
