Dog obedience class

The Yosemite Kennel Club is holding a dog obedience class at 11 a.m. beginning on March 1 at Applegate Park in Merced. The class is six weeks long, covers basic obedience, and includes a Canine Good Citizen class. Dogs must be at least four months old, and all breeds or mixed-breed dogs are welcome. The class aims to teach dogs to heel on a loose leash, sit, lie down, stay and come when called, along with having good manners. The cost is $70 for the six-week course, or $50 for dogs adopted from an animal shelter or a nonprofit rescue organization. For more, call (209) 631-0484.

Used eyeglasses needed

An area optometrist is asking for eyeglass donations. Neil Nebeker and his wife, Leslie will be traveling to Mexicali, Mexico with the Groveland Rotary Club as part of an outreach medical clinic. They would like to collect 1,000 pairs of used eyeglasses, which will be analyzed and cataloged to to be distributed. Glasses should be in good condition without deep scratches, broken frames or missing lenses. They can be donated through Dr. Nebeker’s at Advanced Healthcare, 197 W. El Portal Dr. Suite A, between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call (209) 384-2110.

Glamorous Oscar night

The 86th Annual Academy Awards will be streamed live to the Merced Theatre for a fundraiser that includes: red carpet with paparazzi, black-tie optional dress code, complimentary glass of champagne, light hors d’oeuvres, desserts and no-host bar. The event will be from 4 to 8 p.m. March 2, 301 W. Main St. Tickets are $20 per person and are available at the Merced Theatre box office, at, or at the door. Ice cream social set

Shepherd of the Valley will hold its annual Ice Cream Social from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the corner of White Dove and Yosemite Avenues. There will be clowns, ice cream, a bean bag toss, free drawings, children’s crafts, finger printing and photos. For more information call (209) 631-4221

Advisory board meets

The Merced County advisory board on alcohol and other drug problems will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the county’s mental health administration building, 1137 B St., Merced.

Sierra Club scholarships

The Central Sierra Audubon Society and the area Sierra Club chapter are offering $1,000 scholarships to students in the field of natural sciences. CSAS is offering the Edye Dingman scholarship. The Sierra Club’s scholarship honors Mack Waggoner. The application deadline is Feb. 28.
