An 18-year-old Fresno man was arrested Wednesday evening after a pursuit on Highway 99, the California Highway Patrol reported. The CHP has identified the suspect as Lamel D. London.
The incident was reported at 6:20 p.m. after the CHP was notified of a stolen 1999 Buick Le Sabre. The car was seen parked at a McDonald’s on Winton Parkway and Highway 99. CHP officers and local law enforcement responded to the scene. When the officers tried to contact London, he fled in the stolen Buick and nearly crashed head-on into a Livingston police patrol car, according to the CHP.
A Livingston police officer pursued the Buick, and the suspect drove onto southbound Highway 99 from Winton Parkway. Authorities said that London drove the Buick at 100 mph, eventually crashing into a white Ford pickup on southbound Highway 99 at Franklin Road. The driver of the pickup, a 55-year-old Merced resident, received minor injuries.
The suspect fled on foot, authorities said, running across the northbound lanes of the highway into the area of Ashby Road.
Merced County deputies, a CHP plane, an Atwater police K-9 and the CHP searched for the suspect, finding him near Sunrise and Autumn Avenues. After the suspect was cleared at a hospital for minor injuries, he was booked at the Merced County Jail on suspicion of evading law enforcement, assault with a deadly weapon, possessing a stolen vehicle and fleeing a crash scene, the CHP said.
DUI does not appear to be a factor in the case. It remains under investigation.
